چکیده

The diagram represents the real numbers (in other words the numbers with decimal expansions), arranged in order from smaller to greater. The more strenuous textbooks add some other numbers to the diagram, for example e a little to the left of 3 and π a little to the right of it. These two numbers are irrational; in other words they can’t be written as m/n where m and n are integers. Probably the first irrational number to be discovered was √ 2, the square root of 2, somewhere between 1 and 2 in the diagram. Medieval mathematicians regarded irrational numbers as substandard and used insulting names for them, such as ‘surd’, which is the Latin for deaf-mute. A long time ago people realised that negative real numbers don’t have real square roots; for example no real number is a solution of the equation x2 + 1 = 0. In 1545 Girolamo Cardano published a formula for calculating solutions of cubic equations. The cubic equation

The effect of energy amplification variance on the shock-acceleration

The shock-acceleration theory predicts a power-law energy spectrum in the test particle approximation, and there are two ways to calculate a power-law index, Peacock’s approximation and Vietri’s formulation. In Peacock’s approximation, it is assumed that particles cross a shock front many times and energy-gains for each step are fully uncorrelated. On the other hand, correlation of the distribu...

Revanchist Behaviors in an Academic Style: A Qualitative Study to Analyze Academics’ Revenge

This study focuses on examining the counterproductive behaviors of academics, who have a lesser likelihood to show revanchist acts on account of the characteristics of their professional group, defining the purposes, means, and reasons of revenge, and determining the results of revanchist behaviors. To this end, we conducted a qualitative study on the academics who were working at Turkish state...

Romantic revenge and the Dark Triad: A model of impellance and inhibition

Based on I theory, the present study investigated a model in which the Dark Triad of personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) influence the rated likelihood of engaging in revenge against a romantic partner. We presented participants with a hypothetical act of infidelity, hypothesizing that the Dark Triad would relate positively to factors that could impel revenge (per...

Do peahens not prefer peacocks with more elaborate trains?

Ever since Darwin (1871), the peacock’s train has been cited as the icon of an extravagant conspicuous secondary sexual trait that has evolved through female mate choice. However, Takahashi et al. (2008) recently challenged this idea. They monitored female mate choice during 7 years in a feral peafowl, Pavo cristatus, population in Japan and found no correlation between male mating success and ...
